Day 7-9

I feel like I've always worked here and that I'm not just an intern.
Wednesday 6/8
This was a fairly busy day. The day started off with a Touch Base with the lead girls designer and the other intern to discuss how our time here at Lands'End is going to run. After that all the 40 interns got together to discuss the book we're reading 'They don't Teach Corporate in College'.  I find this book to be rather interesting. It informs you of all the stuff of how to get a job that you don't learn in college. Actually I think that this book should be a part of colleges internship prep class. We also received a handout of about 30 pages of more stuff that one should know when looking into working in a corporation. When I returned back to my department I helped the boys team prepare for a meeting and learned more about CAD. The day ended with a company concert that was pretty good :) .
Thursday 6/9
This day was full of a bunch of classes. It started off with my second textiles class of stitches and seams. They gave us a handout of all the most commonly industry used stitches and seams. They also told us what were more expensive then others and what their industry number is (I forgot the term they used for it). After that class I had a class in IPLM for product development in design. We were trained in a computer lab with about 20 other people and received a handout that exceeded 100 pages. Lots and lots to study :/ . Once all of my classes were over I ended the day helping prepare for the swim wall.
Friday 6/10
YAYYYYY EARLY FRIDAY Every other week the company closes at 1:00pm of Fridays. This day went by pretty fast! Everybody was running around like mad trying to prepare for a meeting to display the colors and prints of the spring 12 line. But in between all the chaos I learned how to fill out and read a mill-sheet for prints and how to tell if a CAD print was done wrong. :)

Day 4-6

Okay so a lot has happened and I've been to busy to write an entry.
Friday -
This was a busy day!!! The day started off with the whole kids design department welcoming me and the other kids design intern with a welcome breakfast :) . The rest of the day was filled with meetings, organizing and classes. All the design, tech. design merchandising and sourcing interns are required to learn this program called IPLM. The design and tech design interns had a class in it on friday that showed us how to use it with Adobe Illustrator. It was a little confusing, but it's okay because I will be taking a lot of these classes this summer. About half way through the day I attending a Design and Merchandising meeting discussing the best and the worst sellers from the catalog and holiday season. After that we were shown the show room for Holiday 2011. It was amazing, I wish I was able to take pictures :(
Monday -
Throughout this internship I will have 3 mentors: Senior Designer for Kids Design, Director for Kids Design and Head Boys Designer. I had a touch base with the senior designer this day and was assigned a gender to work in this summer (boys) and give my summer personal project!!! I am to design a boys fall 2012 pajama and underwear line that coordinates with my teammate who is doing girls. I'm to make all the sketches, flats, spec pack, and CAD textile prints for it. AND this is allowed to go into my portfolio!!!!! I am super excited for the project.
Tuesday -
Today was another busy day. I spent a good portion of the day pulling Color Standards and CAD prints for the boys team. I also helped with preparing a presentation for tomorrows design meeting. Soon I am going to learn how to approve a color standard in the light box for production and be able to do technical flats to be sent off to tech. design. I am really excited about that because they're FLATS LOOK AWESOME !!!

First Day in the Design Department: Day 3

Today was my first day in the Kids Design Department. Me and the other kids design intern Katie got an office together in the design team area. From the time that we walked in there was already a list of classes and meetings to attend and tasks to be done. The day was full of a lot of multi-tasking and problem solving. We spent about half the day in classes teaching us Textiles 101 (which we were quizzed on at the end) and the IBML System (which is a database that a lot of large companies use). I think that this database should be taught in school so that it's not such a crash course to try to understand it in a matter of a few hours. The other half of the day was spent doing trend forecasting for Kids Fall 2012, organizing samples and attending a company wide meeting (5,000 employees) with the new CEO of Sears Holdings. For the trend forecasting I was responsible for boys fall 2012 and tomorrow we're presenting our results to the kids design team. deep breathe lol ..... I have never did so much work within a day before, but it didn't matter to me because I love it. :) I have learned more career relevant stuff in the past 3 days then I have in the 3 years that I've been in college. I love my school, but school can only teach you but so much.

2nd Day at Lands'End Part 2 of Orientation

Today was a long day. We started off with explaining the process large companies go through on getting their merchandise from concept to product and production. We met with a representative from all the large factors of the company that make it is what it is today such as Design, Merchandising, Marketing, Product Development and Distribution, I am probably missing a few. After that we took a tour of the distribution center that was enormous. We even all got to try to do some of the work that they do....and it is not easy!!! At the end of the day all of the Design, Technical Design and Merchandising Interns got a schedule of all the classes that we are required to take here at Lands'End over the summer. My first class starts tomorrow in Fabrics. I am excited and I get to see what my office looks like :)

1st Day at Lands'End Internship Program

To start the day off I was kind of nervous to meet everyone. Once I got there I felt like I was at home. Today and tomorrow are going to be orientation days and then on Thursday we actually get to start working in our departments. Today we got a to learn who their customer is and the history of the company. Then we got to take a tour of the fitness center. IT IS HUMONGOUS!!!! I love it and I'm not even an active person. I'm thinking about taking yoga classes this summer there :) . Tomorrow we are going to be doing tours of the campus all day. The campus is made up of several buildings...and it's a bike ride to get from one side of campus to the other. Lands'End actually has their own bikes that you can borrow. I think it's awesome here and I can't wait to go back tomorrow!
